Conquest of Siberia
Conquest of Siberia
Bronze, silver, transparent acrylic, stainless steel base. 970cm x 400cm x 140cm.
This powerful statue combines classical sculpture and modern elements to portray the drama and pathos of Russian history. Bold features including a disembodied face and reaching hands create a harsh juxtaposition enticing the viewer to learn more.
This work was commissioned for Novosibirsk, the capital of the Siberian region of Russia. The work shows the historical figures and historical events which occurred in medieval Russia such as the Conquest of Siberia. Depicted is the Cossack ataman warrior Yermak Timofeyevich who with his legion of soldiers attached Western lands of Siberia to Russia. Yermak has a significant place in Russian history. He is acclaimed by many and is compared to the explorer Christopher Columbus who broadly speaking discovered the American continent for Europe, similar to how Yermak discovered the great confineless Siberia for Russia.
“My greatest message in this work is that Siberia did not succumb to the Russian Tsar and not Yermak Timofeyevich, but it surrendered to whoever faced it without fear and opened it like a casket without breaking the lock but by knowing the kind words. Whoever is able to see and understand, who can remember it forever. Siberia is disobedient and free like a bird in the sky and like a fish in the ocean” - The artist, Unus commented on his work.
